Questions and Answers
We know that thoughtful pieces come with thoughtful questions. Below you’ll find answers about our process, materials, care, and ordering. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, feel free to contact us — we’re happy to help. What’s the difference between edition pieces and regular products?
At Nahele Carvings, our work is divided into two types: edition pieces and regular category pieces (Wall Art, Freestanding Art, and Boxes).
Edition Pieces
Each edition is created from a single slab of hardwood. The art carved into these pieces is designed specifically for that slab and will never be used again. Once all pieces from the slab are sold, the edition is permanently closed. These pieces are one-of-a-kind — both in material and design.
You’ll find edition pieces listed under their Edition page as well as under their appropriate product category. Each one is clearly marked as part of an edition and labeled “non-repeatable.”
Regular Products (Wall Art, Freestanding Art, Boxes)
Products not tied to a specific edition are listed under one of our three main categories. The artwork used in these pieces may be repeated or resized across different woods and formats. While the design itself can be reused, each finished piece is still a true original due to the natural variation of the wood.
Q: Where are your products made?
A: Everything is crafted in our workshop in North Kohala on Hawaiʻi Island, using solar-powered tools and locally sourced wood.
Q: What types of wood do you use?
A: We work with Hawaiian hardwoods such as koa, mango, monkeypod, milo, and lacewood — each selected for its unique grain, color, and story. Learn more on our [Wood Species page].
Q: Are the carvings done by hand?
A: Every piece is shaped using solar-powered CNC tools, then hand-finished with care. This includes sanding, oiling, and joining — ensuring both precision and soul.
Q: How do I hang wall pieces?
A: Each wall piece arrives with pre-installed mounting hardware and instructions for secure hanging.
Q: What about freestanding pieces?
A: Our freestanding works include a custom-built wood stand made from the same slab — connected with mortise and tenon joinery.
Q: Can multiple panels be joined together?
A: Yes. Select multi-panel pieces use embedded magnets or joinery for alignment and stability. These are designed to accommodate natural wood movement.
Q: Do you ship outside of Hawaiʻi?
A: Yes, we ship throughout the U.S. using well-protected, insured packaging. If you’re outside the U.S., please contact us for a custom quote.
Q: How long does it take to receive my order?
A: Most orders ship within 3–5 business days. If your piece requires finishing or assembly, we’ll notify you with an estimated timeline.
Q: How should I care for my piece?
A: Dust with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners or direct prolonged sunlight. If needed, apply a light coat of hardwax oil to refresh the finish.
Q: Will the wood change over time?
A: Wood is a living material and may darken or shift slightly with age, humidity, and exposure. These natural changes are part of its beauty.
